Metal Stripping

Rejects cost money and when defects cannot be overlooked, plated deposits will need to be stripped and the parts reprocessed.  Selecting a chemical or mechanical process to remove the plated finish without attacking or damaging the base metal can be difficult.  There are a number of factors to consider after acknowledging that the parts must be stripped.  First an accurate determination must be made of what alloy or alloys make up the part. Then, research and testing may be necessary to determine if there is a chemical process that will dissolve the plated deposit without negatively affecting the base metal.  Chemical strippers typically allow for bulk processing, so from a labor and process time standpoint they are often a more cost effective option.  If a chemical option is not feasible, mechanical blasting may be the only choice. 

 After finding a chemical process that will remove the plated deposit and not destroy the parts, care must be taken to properly set up the equipment to efficiently strip the parts. Most stripping solutions require heat, ventilation, agitation and consistent chemical maintenance.  Most stripping solutions also have a finite life, which means that as the stripped metal builds the performance declines and at some point the dissolved metal in solution will reach a level where the stripping capability of the solution will cease.  At this point the stripping solution will need to be dumped, hauled away, treated, etc. and a new stripping solution will need to be made up.
