Burnishing is the process of improving the surface condition of metallic parts by peening them with media in the presence of a burnishing compound; both media and compound are selected specifically for the metal being burnished.

Mass finishing can often be a cost effective option for pretreating parts prior to plating.  In many cases vibratory finishing is used due to the low production cost per piece.  With the proper application of media and compounds, finishes in the 10 to 4 micro-inch range can be produced in a vibratory system. Systems can also be automated to eliminate virtually all hand labor. Die-castings can now go from casting machines to vibratory operating and then to plating without being touched by human hands.
