Zinc Plating


Zinc provides sacrificial or cathodic protection to iron and steel.  Prior to entering the zinc plating solution, steel is typically cleaned in an alkaline soak cleaner and electrocleaner, then processed through an acid pickle where rust and carbon scale are removed.  The acid pickle also activates or positively charges the iron atoms on the surface.  These positively charged atoms act as anodes(positive electrodes) and when in contact with air or water the iron will oxidize or rust.  If a more reactive metal like zinc is attached to the positively charged iron atoms, they become cathodes (negative electrodes) and the more reactive zinc metal will corrode preferentially.  This preferential corrosion of zinc over steel is why zinc is the fourth most widely consumed metal in the world after iron, aluminum and copper.  About one-half of the zinc that is produced is used for protecting steel through zinc plating or galvanizing.

Acid Chloride Zinc

Product - Pavco® ZCL K3

ZCL K3 is Pavco's economical ammonia free or boric acid based zinc plating system. ZCL K3 consists of two proprietary components: ZCL K3 Starter and BRT II. This process will produce a mirror bright ductile zinc deposit which is receptive to chromates. The ZCL K3 system will plate effectively even under adverse conditions, such as bath temperatures in excess of 100°F and high chloride concentrations. Pavco's ZCL K3 process contains no ammonia which is advantageous when nickel and copper are present in the waste steam. The ZCL K3 system is water soluble which makes it easy to use and easy to handle.

Product - Pavco® ZCL K3 Futura

K3 Futura is Pavco's newest generation ammonia free or boric acid based zinc plating system. ZCL K3 Futura consists of two proprietary components: ZCL K3 Futura Starter and BRT II. The K3 Futura process does an excellent job throwing in the lowest current density areas, and will plate effectively when bath temperatures are in excess of 100° F and the total chlorides are above the recommended range. Pavco's ZCL K3 Futura process contains no ammonia which is advantageous when nickel and copper are present in the waste stream. The ZCL K3 Futura system is water soluble which makes it easy to use and easy to handle.

Product - Pavco® ZCL K3 Complete Rack or K3 Complete Barrel

K3 Complete is Pavco's single component  ammonia free or boric acid based zinc plating system specially formulated for Rack or Barrel applications. ZCL K3 Complete Rack/Barrel consists of ZCL K3 Starter and BRT II blended together at a ratio that will maintain Rack baths and Barrel baths at their optimum concentrations. Years of research and data combine to provide the most effective blend of these two proprietary components. Customers keep a 5 gallon pail of Starter and Brightener on hand for minor adjustments if necessary.  The K3 Complete process does an excellent job throwing in the lowest current density areas, and will plate effectively when bath temperatures are in excess of 100° F and the total chlorides are above the recommended range. Pavco's ZCL K3 Complete process contains no ammonia which is advantageous when nickel and copper are present in the waste stream. The ZCL K3 Complete system is water soluble which makes it easy to use and easy to handle.

Product - Pavco® NH4

Pavco® NH4 is a two component, water soluble, low ammonia zinc plating system suitable for either rack or barrel plating operations. It is a high performance acid zinc plating process that allows for plating at higher current densities without burning and will plate efficiently at low metal and low chloride concentrations. The NH4 system produces a lustrous zinc metal deposit on all steel substrates, including hardened steels and castings. It is a field proven technology that has set the standard for the industry and is characterized by ease of control, consistent day to day operation, high temperature tolerance and excellent chromate receptivity. The low ammonia concentration is rarely an issue in waste treatment, but segregating waste streams containing copper and nickel is recommended.

 Product - Pavco® NH4 Futura 

Pavco® NH4 Futura is a low-ammonia chloride plating system that provides the widest possible operating parameters. Platers will enjoy the flexibility offered by a system which allows for wide swing in zinc levels, temperature, and chloride concentrations.

Pavco® Smart Zinc is a high performance acid chloride zinc plating process engineered to significantly increase plating speed and reduce the zinc deposition ratio from high to low current densities.  Increases in low current density deposition of up to 75% are possible, as well as increases in plating speed by as much as 30%. SmartZinc is a two component, low ammonia, high temperature zinc plating system that produces a lustrous zinc metal deposit on all steel substrates including hardened steel and castings. Smart Zinc is field proven technology that will increase the productivity and profitability of your process.

Product - Pavco® SmartZinc II

Pavco® SmartZinc II is for users that prefer not to run their bath hot but still enjoy the benefits of the standard SmartZinc system. These benefits include improved current density distribution, low burning potential, increased productivity, improved ductility and low organic inclusion in the deposit. SmartZinc II uses SmartZinc Carrier and BRT II as proprietary additives.  

Alkaline Zinc - Non-Cyanide

Product - Pavco® Diamante

Diamante is the zinc plating industry's only proven low metal zinc-plating process based on potassium hydroxide. The plating efficiency, leveling characteristics, deposit brilliance, and chromate receptivity are superior to conventional alkaline zinc processes. Field experience has shown the system to be more efficient than high-metal zinc systems, while offering the cost savings of longer chromate life and lower chemical usage in waste treatment. 

Product - Pavco® Legacy

The Legacy process is a dual additive system that is stable, field proven and suitable for either rack or barrel operations. Legacy contains no chelating agents or complexors. The deposit easily accepts all chromate conversion coatings. Plating efficiency, plating range and the leveling characteristics of Legacy are unique among alkaline zinc processes. Legacy set the standard for alkaline zinc plating in the industry.

Product - Pavco® Merlin

Pavco® Merlin is the latest development in high performance alkaline zinc plating processes.  Merlin is is a dual additive, high efficiency zinc plating system engineered to produce bright deposits at low metal concentrations. The plating range flexibility, leveling characteristics and temperature stability of Merlin are unique among alkaline zinc processes. Suitable for rack or barrel operations, Merlin contains no chelating agents or complexors and can be used with either sodium or potassium hydroxide. When used with Potassium Hydroxide, the Merlin system is much more tolerant to carbonate build up.
